Thursday 18 January - Boston

Some partners can give donuts. Others can give plenty. Jim Moriarty certainly fits into that latter category.

We would have went along to tonight's NHL game irrespective. But Jim happened to rustle up some tickets probably about 15 rows back from the rink (as opposed to the nosebleeds where we were stuck for last Wednesday's NBA game). The difference was amazing. As I noted to Pete during the night, our system of sport is a little different in Oz. If you want a seat close to the action, perhaps right on the fence, you don't need to pay top dollar at the cricket or the footy - you just need to show up rather early. In the US however, the premium, close-up seats go to the one prepared to put up the most of the cold hard stuff. So getting that close was a balltearer - not to mention the feed Jim shouted us before the game.

"We" refers to myself, Pete, Jim, Becky and Allison Peabody, a former Melbourne secondee and mate of Pete's. We didn't see the start of the game, getting there with a few minutes left in the first of the 3 20-minute periods (why three???). Not sure how Pete missed the first goal, which was scored shortly after sitting down, but he did.

The game is a lot more about action than the NBA, and obviously the reaction is a lot bigger when a goal is scored, given the lower number of goals scored. Won't be the last time we'll be there. The fact that the Bruins won dramatically after a penalty shootout made the game all that much better. The fans went ape-droppings (nuts) after the game, which is probably fair enough given the winning goal was scored by a 19-year old bloke recovering from treatment for testicular cancer. Otherwise, the game wouldn't have been any more important than any of the other 81 regular season games that are to be played by the Bruins this year.

Beers at Bell in Hand followed, despite Pete vowing on Monday not to head there again (lasted a total of 3 days). Spent most of the night trying to get a cricket score from back in Australia. Finally Hollis came to our rescue.. I'm not sure why we tried anyone else before him, including Adnams...
